Who served as Facebook's Chief Operating Officer from 2008 to 2022?

The story behind the answer

Sheryl Sandberg served as Facebook’s chief operating officer from 2008 to 2022. Facebook announced her hiring in March 2008, and she remained COO after the company later changed its corporate name to Meta Platforms.

Before joining Facebook, Sandberg was a vice president at Google, where she worked on online sales and operations. Mark Zuckerberg recruited her after meeting her in late 2007, even though he had not initially begun a formal search for a COO.

At Facebook, Sandberg helped build the company’s advertising and business operations. Her work was closely associated with turning a fast-growing social network into a profitable advertising business, while Zuckerberg continued as chief executive.

Sandberg announced in June 2022 that she would step down as COO in the fall. She remained on Meta’s board for a time, so the end of her COO tenure should not be confused with her later departure from the board.
