Meta’s hardware division focused on augmented and virtual reality is called Reality Labs.
The division grew out of Oculus VR, the company founded in 2012 by Palmer Luckey, Brendan Iribe, Michael Antonov, and Nate Mitchell to develop virtual-reality headsets. Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014, bringing its technology and team into the company’s growing VR efforts.
The name changed over time. Oculus VR became Facebook Reality Labs in 2020, and the unit was renamed Reality Labs in 2021 after Facebook rebranded as Meta. Its work now spans hardware, software, research, and immersive social experiences.
A common mix-up is treating Oculus as the current division’s name. Oculus is the former company and a product brand associated with headsets such as the Quest line. “Facebook Reality Labs” was also a former name, while Reality Labs is the current canonical answer.
