Who scored the winning goal in the NHL's longest game, played in 1936?

The story behind the answer

Mud Bruneteau scored the winning goal in the NHL's longest game, a 1936 playoff contest.

Bruneteau scored for the Detroit Red Wings at 16:30 of the sixth overtime period on March 24, 1936. Detroit defeated the Montreal Maroons 1–0 after 116 minutes and 30 seconds of overtime, making the total game length 176 minutes and 30 seconds.

The marathon was the first game of a best-of-five Stanley Cup semifinal series. Detroit goaltender Normie Smith stopped all 92 Montreal shots for the shutout, while Maroons goaltender Lorne Chabot also delivered a remarkable performance.

The game remains the longest in NHL history by total playing time. It is often confused with later playoff marathons because several NHL games have reached four or five overtimes. Bruneteau played five NHL seasons, all with Detroit, and the historic goal was his only goal of that playoff series.
