Jack Clarke scored Ipswich Town’s 90th-minute winner against Sunderland on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Ipswich defeated Sunderland 2–1 at Portman Road in Gary O’Neil’s first competitive match as the club’s manager. Summer signing Emersonn opened the scoring for Ipswich after combining with Julio Enciso, another new arrival.
Sunderland equalised through Ecuadorian winger Nilson Angulo, who scored directly from a free-kick. Ipswich then found the decisive goal in the 90th minute, when substitute Jack Clarke struck against his former club.
The victory gave Ipswich their first Matchweek 1 top-flight win since the 1993–94 season. Clarke’s goal carried an additional personal storyline because he had previously played for Sunderland. That connection makes him easy to confuse with Angulo, who scored Sunderland’s goal, or with Emersonn, who opened the scoring for Ipswich. The final score was Ipswich Town 2–1 Sunderland.
