Who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final?

Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final.

Hurst scored all three of his goals for England against West Germany at Wembley Stadium on 30 July 1966. England won 4–2 after extra time, and Hurst’s final goal arrived in the closing minute, completing the first hat-trick in a World Cup final.

His second goal remains one of football’s most famous controversies. The shot struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced near the goal line before being cleared. Referee Gottfried Dienst consulted Soviet linesman Tofiq Bahramov, who indicated that the ball had crossed the line, and the goal was awarded.

Hurst’s record stood alone for 56 years. In the 2022 final, France’s Kylian Mbappé also scored three times against Argentina, but France lost on penalties. Hurst therefore remains the only player to score a hat-trick in a men’s World Cup final and finish on the winning side. Bobby Charlton was another England star in the match, but he scored twice in the semi-final, not the final.
