Who recorded the hit single "That's All" in 1984?

The story behind the answer

Genesis recorded the hit single “That’s All,” released in the early 1980s and charting prominently in 1984. The song appeared on the band’s self-titled 1983 album, commonly known as Genesis, and became one of the group’s most recognizable pop-rock singles.

“That’s All” was written collectively by Genesis members Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford. Collins sang lead vocals and played drums, Banks supplied keyboards, and Rutherford played guitar and bass. Producer Hugh Padgham helped shape the polished sound associated with Genesis during this period.

Although the single was released in 1983 in several markets, it reached its major U.S. peak in early 1984, climbing to number six on the Billboard Hot 100. That made it Genesis’s first U.S. Top 10 hit. In the United Kingdom, it reached number 16.

Listeners sometimes mistake the recording for a Phil Collins solo song because of Collins’s unmistakable lead vocal and the track’s accessible pop style. It is nevertheless a Genesis performance, and its success helped bridge the band’s progressive-rock past with its increasingly mainstream 1980s sound.
