Who reached the bottom of Molloy Deep on 24 August 2019?

Victor Vescovo reached the bottom of Molloy Deep on 24 August 2019. He made the descent in the crewed deep-submergence vehicle Limiting Factor during the Five Deeps Expedition, completing the expedition's goal of visiting the deepest point in each of the world's five oceans.

Molloy Deep lies in the Fram Strait, between Greenland and Svalbard, and is the deepest known point in the Arctic Ocean. Vescovo descended from the support ship DSSV Pressure Drop, with the dive establishing a depth of approximately 5,550 metres through direct pressure measurements.

The dive is notable because Vescovo is identified as the only person to have reached the bottom of Molloy Deep. The date is also significant: it marked the completion of the Five Deeps project, which began in 2018 and included descents to the deepest points of the Atlantic, Southern, Indian, Pacific and Arctic oceans. Don Walsh and James Cameron are associated with major Mariana Trench dives, while Alan Jamieson was a scientist on several deep-ocean expeditions, but none of them reached Molloy Deep's bottom.
