An autonomous baited lander recorded a juvenile snailfish at 8,336 metres during an expedition involving researchers from the University of Western Australia and Japanese institutions. The fish was identified only as a member of the genus Pseudoliparis; it was not formally assigned a species name.

The trench, also called the Izu-Bonin Trench, lies south of Japan and forms part of a major subduction zone where the Pacific Plate descends beneath the Philippine Sea Plate. Its location helps explain why it contains extensive hadal depths.

A common mix-up is the Mariana Trench, which previously held the deepest-fish observation record. The 2022 footage surpassed that earlier observation, while the deepest fish physically captured is a separate comparison.
