Who put out the hit single "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" in 1992?

The story behind the answer

George Michael and Elton John put out the hit single "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" in 1992. The recording was a live duet, released in late 1991 but reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1992.

The song began as Elton John's 1974 recording, written by John with lyricist Bernie Taupin for the album Caribou. George Michael had performed the song with John at Live Aid in 1985, but John only played piano during that appearance. Their later full duet took place at London's Wembley Arena on March 23, 1991, during Michael's Cover to Cover tour.

The single became a major transatlantic success, topping the charts in both the United Kingdom and United States. Proceeds benefited ten charities. A common mix-up is calling it solely a George Michael song or solely an Elton John song: the original belongs to John, while the famous 1991-92 hit is credited to both artists.
