Who provides the voice of Dory?

The story behind the answer

Ellen DeGeneres provides the voice of Dory.

DeGeneres voices Dory in Finding Nemo, giving the character her energetic, conversational style and famously scattered memory. Dory's optimistic personality contrasts with Marlin's anxious, overprotective nature, making their unlikely partnership the emotional center of the film.

Director Andrew Stanton originally imagined Dory as male. The idea changed after he saw DeGeneres on television and was struck by the way she shifted between subjects while speaking. That quality helped inspire Dory's rapid changes of thought and her short-term memory loss.

DeGeneres also reprised the role in Finding Dory, the 2016 sequel. The character's signature message, “Just keep swimming,” became closely associated with both Dory and DeGeneres, although the phrase is spoken by the fictional character rather than being a factual description of fish behavior.
