Who produced the original Tekken video game?
Answer
Hajime Nakatani
Answer
Hajime Nakatani
Hajime Nakatani produced the original Tekken video game. He is credited as producer on the 1994 title, which Namco developed and published for arcades before bringing it to the PlayStation in 1995.
Nakatani's producer credit is easy to confuse with the game's other major staff roles. Seiichi Ishii directed and designed Tekken, while Masanori Yamada was credited as a programmer. Katsuhiro Harada is strongly associated with the franchise because he later became one of its best-known producers and directors, but he was not the producer of the original game.
Tekken began as an internal Namco experiment in animating 3D character models rather than as a conventional fighting-game project. It evolved into Namco's answer to Sega's Virtua Fighter, with Ishii's experience on that series influencing its direction. Nakatani's production role belonged to this formative arcade project.
The game's success helped establish Tekken as a major PlayStation fighting-game series. Its System 11 arcade hardware was derived from PlayStation technology, making the conversion comparatively straightforward and allowing the home release to expand the roster and add new features.
