Who plays the character of Bulldog Briscoe?

The story behind the answer

Dan Butler plays Bulldog Briscoe, the loud, abrasive sports-radio host on Frasier.

Bulldog’s full name is Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe. He works at KACL, the Seattle radio station where Frasier hosts his call-in psychiatry program. Bulldog hosts Gonzo Sports Show, which follows Frasier’s broadcast, and his aggressive macho persona provides a comic contrast to Frasier’s polished, intellectual style.

Butler appeared in every season except one of the original series, which ran from 1993 to 2004. Bulldog is especially memorable for his swagger, constant flirting, and habit of treating nearly every interaction as a competition. Although he often behaves boorishly, the character occasionally reveals vulnerability beneath the bravado.

A common mix-up is confusing Bulldog with other KACL figures. Tom McGowan played station manager Kenny Daly, Edward Hibbert played restaurant critic Gil Chesterton, and John Ratzenberger was not the actor behind Bulldog. Butler also reprised the role in the later Frasier revival, further confirming the character’s association with him.
