Who played Frasier's ex-wife Lilith Sternin on Frasier?

The story behind the answer

Bebe Neuwirth played Frasier's ex-wife, Lilith Sternin, on Frasier.

Lilith was introduced in Cheers as a highly intelligent psychiatrist whose severe, analytical personality contrasted with Frasier Crane's own intellectual pretensions. She and Frasier eventually began a relationship, married, and had a son, Frederick. By the beginning of Frasier, their marriage had ended, and Lilith remained based in Boston while Frasier moved to Seattle.

Neuwirth reprised the role in several Frasier episodes, preserving the character's famously chilly delivery and razor-sharp arguments with Frasier. Lilith was not created solely for the spin-off: she first appeared as a one-off Cheers character in 1986, then became recurring and eventually part of that show's regular ensemble. Neuwirth won two Primetime Emmy Awards for playing Lilith on Cheers and later received another Emmy nomination for her Frasier appearances. A common mix-up is confusing her with Shelley Long, who played Diane Chambers, or Rhea Perlman, who played Carla Tortelli on Cheers.
