Who plays Jeff D. Sheldrake in The Apartment?

The story behind the answer

Who plays Jeff D. Sheldrake in The Apartment? Fred MacMurray plays Jeff D. Sheldrake.

The Apartment is Billy Wilder’s 1960 romantic comedy-drama about C. C. Baxter, played by Jack Lemmon, an insurance clerk who lends his Upper West Side apartment to company executives. Sheldrake is Baxter’s boss and the company’s personnel manager, one of the men who exploits Baxter’s arrangement.

MacMurray’s performance was deliberately unsettling because he was widely known for playing sympathetic, decent, or harmless characters. As Sheldrake, he portrays a polished executive whose charm masks selfishness and repeated infidelity. Sheldrake is having an affair with Fran Kubelik, played by Shirley MacLaine, whom Baxter secretly loves.

Wilder originally intended Paul Douglas for the role, but Douglas died unexpectedly before production. MacMurray replaced him, and the part became one of the darker turns in his career. The film’s supporting cast also includes Ray Walston, Edie Adams, and Jack Kruschen.
