Which 1939 Greta Garbo comedy has a screenplay co-written by Billy Wilder?

The story behind the answer

The 1939 Greta Garbo comedy with a screenplay co-written by Billy Wilder is Ninotchka.

Directed and produced by Ernst Lubitsch for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Ninotchka was written by Wilder, Charles Brackett, and Walter Reisch from a story by Melchior Lengyel. Its plot sends a stern Soviet emissary to Paris, where Western luxury and romance gradually challenge her ideological certainty.

The film is especially notable because it was Garbo’s first full comedy role, promoted with the famous slogan “Garbo laughs!” She plays Nina Ivanovna Yakushova, nicknamed Ninotchka, opposite Melvyn Douglas as Leon d’Algout. The film earned Garbo her fourth and final Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

A common mix-up is confusing Ninotchka with Silk Stockings, the later musical adaptation of the same basic story. Silk Stockings opened on Broadway in 1955 and became a 1957 film starring Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse; it was not the Garbo film co-written by Wilder.
