Who plays Frasier's father, Martin?

John Mahoney plays Frasier’s father, Martin Crane. Mahoney portrayed the retired Seattle police detective throughout the original Frasier, which aired from 1993 to 2004.

Martin is the practical, blunt, and often proudly ordinary counterpoint to his sons Frasier and Niles, both highly educated psychiatrists. After a gunshot wound to his hip forces him into retirement, Martin moves in with Frasier, creating the family arrangement that drives much of the series. His relationship with his Jack Russell terrier, Eddie, and his battered recliner became two of the show’s most recognizable running jokes.

Mahoney was an English-born American actor who had already built a distinguished theater and film career before Frasier. He won a Tony Award for the 1986 Broadway revival of The House of Blue Leaves. His performance as Martin earned two Golden Globe nominations and two Primetime Emmy nominations, helping make the character one of television’s best-known sitcom fathers.
