Who played the role of the Cigarette Smoking Man?

The story behind the answer

William B. Davis played the Cigarette Smoking Man on The X-Files. The Canadian actor portrayed the mysterious smoker who became one of the series' most important antagonists and a central figure in its government-conspiracy mythology.

The character first appeared in the 1993 pilot, initially written as a nearly silent extra at a meeting. His recurring presence grew over time, and the Cigarette Smoking Man eventually became a key member of the Syndicate, the secret organization concealing evidence of alien existence and planning for colonization.

Davis's performance was especially distinctive because the character often communicated through silence, gestures, and an ever-present cigarette rather than long speeches. The role earned him widespread recognition, even though he did not receive an individual major acting award for it. He was part of ensemble nominations from the Screen Actors Guild.

Viewers sometimes confuse the character with other prominent supporting actors. Mitch Pileggi played FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner, Nicholas Lea played Alex Krycek, and David Duchovny played Fox Mulder. Davis also appeared in flashbacks as older versions of the character, while younger portrayals were performed by other actors.
