The X-Files episode presented as a crossover with Cops is titled “X-Cops.”
“X-Cops” is the twelfth episode of the series’ seventh season, written by Vince Gilligan and directed by Michael Watkins. It originally aired on February 20, 2000, and follows Mulder and Scully while they investigate a supernatural case being filmed by the reality television program Cops.
The episode adopts Cops’ documentary style, including handheld video, police interviews and an apparent ride-along structure. Mulder believes a werewolf may be responsible for attacks, but the monster ultimately takes forms based on its victims’ fears.
Unlike a conventional two-show storyline, “X-Cops” is best described as a fictional or pseudo-crossover: characters from the real Cops format do not drive a separate continuing plot. The episode is also notable for its unusually sparse editing and its use of the Cops opening style before The X-Files branding appears.
