Jeremy Theobald played the lead role in Christopher Nolan’s debut feature film Following.

Theobald plays the unnamed young man, credited as Bill and later identified as Daniel Lloyd. The character follows strangers through London, initially treating the habit as material for his writing. His curiosity draws him into the orbit of Cobb, a burglar who claims to follow people professionally and uses surveillance to select targets.

Following was made on an extremely small budget of about $6,000 and shot in black and white on 16mm film. Nolan wrote, produced, directed, photographed and edited the film, while many scenes were rehearsed extensively to reduce the amount of film used. The film’s fragmented, non-linear structure became an early sign of Nolan’s interest in memory, identity and unreliable chronology.

A common mix-up is confusing Theobald’s role with Alex Haw’s Cobb, Lucy Russell’s Blonde or John Nolan’s Policeman. Theobald was also involved behind the scenes as a producer, making his connection to Following especially central.
