The opening scene of Tenet takes place in Kyiv, at the Kyiv Opera House.
The film begins with a covert operation during a staged terrorist siege at an opera performance. The unnamed Protagonist, played by John David Washington, enters with a tactical team to rescue an intelligence asset and recover a mysterious object. The sequence introduces the film’s espionage world before its time-inversion concepts are explained.
Kyiv is also important to Tenet’s recurring wordplay. “Opera” is one of the five words in the ancient Sator Square, alongside Sator, Arepo, Tenet and Rotas; each appears in the story as a character, location or organization. This makes the opening setting part of the film’s larger structural puzzle.
A frequent mix-up concerns the filming location. Although the story places the scene in Kyiv, the opera-house interiors were filmed mainly at Linnahall in Tallinn, Estonia. Tallinn also appears elsewhere in the film, but it is not the fictional location of the opening siege. Kyiv is therefore the canonical answer to the question about where the scene takes place.
