Who played Sherlock Holmes’s father in BBC’s Sherlock?

Timothy Carlton played Sherlock Holmes’s father in BBC’s Sherlock.

Carlton appears as Mr Holmes, the father of Sherlock, Mycroft and Eurus. The character is seen with his wife during family-related stories, including scenes that explore Sherlock’s childhood and the emotional history of the Holmes siblings.

The casting carries an additional connection: Timothy Carlton is the real-life father of Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes. His wife, Wanda Ventham, plays Mrs Holmes, making the on-screen parents a married couple in the story as well as a family pairing behind the production.

Mark Gatiss is sometimes mistakenly named because he plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s brother and a prominent member of the Holmes family. James Fox plays Lord Smallwood, while David Burke is associated with another Holmes adaptation as Dr Watson. Carlton’s credit is specifically for Sherlock’s father.
