In BBC’s Sherlock, what is the name of the detective inspector at Scotland Yard?

The story behind the answer

In BBC’s Sherlock, the detective inspector at Scotland Yard is Greg Lestrade.

Greg Lestrade works with Sherlock Holmes on difficult investigations and is one of the detective’s most important official contacts. He often questions Sherlock’s methods, but he also recognizes that Sherlock’s deductions can solve cases the police cannot.

Rupert Graves plays Lestrade in the series. The character appears from the first episode, “A Study in Pink,” and remains a recurring presence through the four series. His professional relationship with Sherlock is complicated by irritation, respect and occasional dependence.

Lestrade is based on Inspector Lestrade from Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. BBC’s Sherlock gives the character the first name Greg and emphasizes his role within modern London policing. He should not be confused with Philip Anderson, a forensic investigator who frequently clashes with Sherlock.
