Who played Janine Hawkins in the BBC television series Sherlock?

The story behind the answer

Yasmine Akram played Janine Hawkins in the BBC television series Sherlock.

Janine appears in “The Sign of Three” and “His Last Vow,” both episodes in series 3. She works as an assistant to Charles Augustus Magnussen and becomes involved in Sherlock Holmes’s attempt to learn more about Magnussen’s influence and information network. Janine initially presents herself as romantically interested in Sherlock, but the situation is more complicated than it first appears.

Yasmine Akram is an Irish actress, comedian and writer. Her performance as Janine is notable because the character is not simply a romantic subplot: she helps expose Sherlock’s willingness to manipulate appearances during an investigation.

Janine is sometimes confused with Mary Morstan, John Watson’s wife, because both characters are introduced around the same series and appear in wedding-related scenes. Mary is played by Amanda Abbington; Janine is played by Yasmine Akram.
