Who played Gunther in the sitcom Friends?

James Michael Tyler played Gunther in the sitcom Friends.

Tyler appeared as Gunther, the blond manager of Central Perk, the coffeehouse regularly visited by the six main characters. Gunther’s unrequited love for Rachel became a recurring storyline, while his dry reactions and limited dialogue made him one of the show’s most recognizable supporting characters.

Although Gunther was present throughout the series, he was not one of the six principal friends. Tyler’s first appearance was in the second episode, “The One with the Sonogram at the End,” and the role expanded over time as Central Perk became an important social setting.

Viewers sometimes confuse Tyler with other guest actors who played recurring Friends characters, including Paul Rudd, who played Mike Hannigan, and Hank Azaria, who played David. Tyler later appeared in other television programs, but Gunther remained his signature role. He died in 2021 at age 59.
