Ross calls his martial-arts-like state of awareness “Unagi” in Friends.
The joke appears in the sixth-season episode “The One with Unagi.” Ross claims that true total awareness is called unagi and says he has achieved it through years of training. Rachel and Phoebe challenge him because they believe he is confusing the term with a martial-arts concept.
In Japanese, unagi ordinarily means freshwater eel, not a state of combat readiness. That distinction is central to the comedy: Ross confidently uses a real Japanese word incorrectly. The episode also shows Rachel and Phoebe preparing surprise attacks to test whether Ross’s supposed awareness is genuine.
The phrase became one of the show’s best-known catchphrases, often quoted without the surrounding explanation. It is therefore important not to treat “unagi” as the actual name of a martial-arts discipline. In Friends, it is Ross’s mistaken label for complete awareness.
