Who played drums in the group, Big Star?

The story behind the answer

Jody Stephens played drums in the group Big Star. He was the band's original drummer and one of its founding members, alongside Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, and Andy Hummel.

Big Star formed in Memphis in 1971 and recorded three influential albums: “#1 Record” (1972), “Radio City” (1974), and “Third/Sister Lovers” (released in 1978). Although the band achieved limited commercial success at first, its power-pop sound later influenced artists including R.E.M., The Replacements, and Teenage Fanclub.

Stephens remained associated with Big Star through its later reunions and tribute performances. After Chris Bell died in 1978 and Alex Chilton and Andy Hummel died in 2010, Stephens became the last surviving original member. He also continued working as a musician and producer, including performances with Luther Russell in the duo Those Pretty Wrongs.

A common mix-up is confusing Big Star's drummer with its better-known singer and guitarist, Alex Chilton. Chilton supplied much of the band's voice, but Stephens was the musician behind the drum kit.
