Who played Clare Quilty in Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita?
Answer
Peter Sellers
Answer
Peter Sellers
Peter Sellers played Clare Quilty in Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita.
Quilty is the elusive playwright and filmmaker who becomes a disturbing rival to Humbert Humbert for Dolores Haze’s attention. Sellers also appears in several other roles in the film, demonstrating the comic and dramatic versatility that made him one of the era’s most distinctive screen performers.
James Mason plays Humbert Humbert, while Shelley Winters plays Charlotte Haze, Dolores’s mother. Sue Lyon portrays Dolores, the young character at the center of Humbert’s obsession. Sellers’s performance as Quilty is deliberately eccentric, helping make the character seem both theatrical and threatening.
Kubrick’s Lolita was released in 1962 and adapted Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial 1955 novel. Nabokov wrote the screenplay, although the finished film differs from the novel in tone and detail. A common mix-up is confusing Sellers’s Quilty with Mason’s narrator and protagonist, Humbert.
