Peter Sellers plays three roles in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove.
Sellers portrays United States President Merkin Muffley, former Nazi scientist Dr. Strangelove, and Royal Air Force Group Captain Lionel Mandrake. The performances differ sharply in accent, posture, and comic style, allowing Sellers to represent multiple perspectives within the film’s nuclear-crisis satire.
Sellers was originally expected to play Major T. J. “King” Kong as well, but physical limitations and scheduling complications prevented him from taking that fourth part. Slim Pickens ultimately played Kong, the bomber commander whose role is central to the film’s escalating crisis.
The three-role performance is often remembered as one of the film’s defining production facts. Sellers received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and the film also starred George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, and Peter Bull.
