Who played Apollo Creed in the Rocky films?

The story behind the answer

The actor who played Apollo Creed in the Rocky films is Carl Weathers.

Weathers portrayed the charismatic world heavyweight champion in Rocky (1976), Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), and Rocky IV (1985). Apollo begins as Rocky Balboa’s intimidating opponent, but the character develops into Rocky’s friend, trainer, and mentor before his death in the fourth film.

Apollo was created by Sylvester Stallone and was partly inspired by real-life heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. His flashy entrances, confident showmanship, and fast, athletic boxing style also invited comparisons with Muhammad Ali, who was reigning champion when the first Rocky was released. Weathers’ performance gave Apollo enough charisma and complexity to become more than a conventional movie antagonist.

Viewers sometimes confuse the actor with the character: Apollo Creed is fictional, while Carl Weathers was the performer. Weathers had also played professional football, including a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders, before becoming widely known as an actor. Outside Rocky, his notable roles included Dillon in Predator, Chubbs Peterson in Happy Gilmore, and Greef Karga in The Mandalorian.
