Who played Anne Elk in Anne Elk's Theory on Brontosauruses?

The story behind the answer

John Cleese played Anne Elk in “Anne Elk’s Theory on Brontosauruses.”

Cleese performs the role in drag as a television guest who is desperate to receive proper credit for her ideas. She repeatedly interrupts herself with throat-clearing, circumlocution and anxious reminders that her name should be presented as “A. Elk, brackets, Miss, brackets.” The presenter interviewing her is played by Graham Chapman in the original sketch.

After an extended struggle to explain her discovery, Anne Elk finally states her theory: all brontosauruses are thin at one end, much thicker in the middle, and thin again at the far end. The joke turns scientific grandiosity into an observation so obvious that it barely qualifies as a theory.

The sketch comes from Episode 31 of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” broadcast in 1972. It was later recorded under the title “Miss Anne Elk” for “Monty Python’s Previous Record,” and the character returned in the group’s 2014 reunion performance. The name also inspired the term “Elk theories” for explanations that are merely minimal descriptions rather than substantive theories.
