Who played Alex DeLarge in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange?

The story behind the answer

Malcolm McDowell played Alex DeLarge in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.

Alex is the film’s narrator and central character, a young gang leader whose violent behavior is followed by imprisonment and an experimental attempt at behavioral conditioning. McDowell’s performance combines charm, theatricality, menace, and vulnerability, making Alex one of the most recognizable protagonists in Kubrick’s filmography.

A Clockwork Orange was released in 1971 and adapted from Anthony Burgess’s 1962 novel. The screenplay retains the book’s invented slang, Nadsat, which mixes English with Russian-derived words and helps create Alex’s distinctive voice. McDowell also sang “Singin’ in the Rain” during one of the film’s most notorious scenes, an idea he introduced during production.

The film became controversial because of its graphic violence and its perceived relationship to real-world copycat crimes. Kubrick withdrew it from circulation in the United Kingdom after reports of threats and harassment, and it was not legally screened there again until after his death.
