Who performed the first successful uterus transplant that led to a live birth?

The story behind the answer

Mats Brännström performed the first successful uterus transplant that led to a live birth.

Brännström led the Swedish team that transplanted a donated uterus into a woman in 2013. The recipient later became pregnant through in vitro fertilization, and she gave birth to a healthy boy in 2014.

The donor was the recipient’s 61-year-old mother, and the transplant was removed after the birth of the second child because long-term immunosuppression carries risks. The uterus was not needed for the recipient’s survival, making the procedure different from life-saving organ transplantation.

Uterus transplantation can provide a route to pregnancy for some people with uterine-factor infertility. It is distinct from ovarian transplantation, which concerns fertility and hormone production rather than providing a womb for pregnancy.
