Who originally voiced Rick and Morty?

The story behind the answer

Justin Roiland originally voiced both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith in Rick and Morty. He co-created the series with Dan Harmon and performed the two central characters during the show's first six seasons.

Roiland's performance helped define the show's sound. Rick speaks with a rough, burping delivery inspired partly by a manic parody of Doc Brown from Back to the Future, while Morty has a nervous, high-pitched voice that sharply contrasts with Rick's confidence and cynicism. Having one actor perform both roles also made their rapid exchanges feel especially distinctive.

The answer is sometimes confused with the other original cast members. Spencer Grammer voiced Summer, Chris Parnell voiced Jerry, and Sarah Chalke voiced Beth. Dan Harmon co-created the series and occasionally performed voices, but he was not the original voice of Rick or Morty.

Roiland stopped providing the characters' voices after his departure from the production. Beginning with season 7 in 2023, Ian Cardoni voiced Rick and Harry Belden voiced Morty, while the earlier seasons remain associated with Roiland's original performances.
