Who organized Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition in 1916?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz organized Georgia O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition in 1916.

Stieglitz showed O'Keeffe's drawings and watercolors at his New York gallery, 291, in April 1916. The exhibition was a decisive early event because it introduced her abstract works to an influential American audience before she had established a public career as a painter.

O'Keeffe was teaching in Texas when her work reached Stieglitz. She had sent a group of charcoal abstractions to her friend Anita Pollitzer, who showed them to him without O'Keeffe's prior permission. Stieglitz recognized their originality and included them in the exhibition. His support eventually led to a long professional relationship and, later, marriage.

This event is sometimes confused with O'Keeffe's first museum retrospective or with her first New York exhibition as a mature professional. The 1916 show at 291 is generally identified as her first solo exhibition. Stieglitz's gallery was then a crucial venue for American modernist art.
