Who is widely known as the “Father of Disco” for developing influential club-editing techniques?

The story behind the answer

Tom Moulton is widely known as the “Father of Disco” for developing influential club-editing and remixing techniques.

Moulton began making extended reel-to-reel edits for dancers and DJs in the early 1970s. He joined sections of songs together, lengthened instrumental passages and created smoother transitions, allowing dancers to remain on the floor for longer periods.

He also helped popularize the 12-inch single, a format that gave disco records more room for extended mixes and stronger sound on club systems. Moulton worked with artists and labels including Philadelphia International and Salsoul, and his edits became important models for later remix culture.

He is sometimes confused with Giorgio Moroder, the producer associated with electronic disco, or David Mancuso, the influential New York DJ and club host. Moulton’s importance was especially tied to the way recorded music was reshaped for clubs rather than merely to performing or producing the original tracks.
