What city hosted the 1979 Disco Demolition Night event?

The story behind the answer

Chicago hosted the 1979 Disco Demolition Night event.

The promotion took place at Comiskey Park on July 12, 1979, between games of a Chicago White Sox doubleheader. Radio personality Steve Dahl organized the event with the White Sox and local station WLUP-FM, inviting fans to bring disco records to be destroyed.

A crate of records was detonated on the field, but thousands of attendees rushed onto the playing surface afterward. The second game was forfeited because the stadium could not be cleared safely. The event became one of the most famous symbols of the backlash against disco.

Although it was promoted as an anti-disco stunt, commentators have also examined its links to rock-radio rivalry, record-company economics, and hostility toward disco’s Black, Latino, and LGBTQ+ audiences. The event occurred in Chicago, not at a New York nightclub.
