Who is traditionally credited with composing the Standard Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh?

The story behind the answer

Sin-leqi-unninni is traditionally credited with composing the Standard Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh.

The Standard Babylonian version is the best-known form of the epic and was written in Akkadian cuneiform. Sin-leqi-unninni is named in later Mesopotamian tradition as its editor or composer, although the poem developed from older Sumerian and Babylonian materials over many centuries. This means the attribution does not imply that one person invented every episode from nothing.

The Standard Babylonian text was copied on clay tablets during the first millennium BCE. Its language and arrangement differ from earlier Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh, which survive as separate compositions rather than as one continuous epic.

Sin-leqi-unninni should not be confused with Enheduanna, the famous Akkadian-period priestess and poet, or Hammurabi, the Babylonian king known for his law collection. The attribution is traditional and scholarly, rather than a modern authorship record in the sense of a signed manuscript.
