In Sumerian mythology, what name is given to the demon who serves as a herald of death?

The story behind the answer

In Sumerian mythology, Namtar is the demon who serves as a herald of death.

Namtar’s name is commonly interpreted as meaning “fate” or “destiny,” and he is associated with death, disease, and the decrees of the Netherworld. In myths involving the underworld, he functions as an official or messenger rather than as a random monster. His role reflects the strongly bureaucratic image of the Mesopotamian afterlife, where divine officials carry out ordered decisions.

Namtar appears prominently in Inanna’s Descent to the Netherworld. After Inanna enters Ereshkigal’s realm, Namtar is involved in the punishment imposed on her. He also appears in the story of Enki and Ninhursag and in later Akkadian traditions, where his name remains connected with plague and death.

Namtar is distinct from Pazuzu, a protective or dangerous wind demon, and from the gallu demons, who are underworld beings with different roles.
