Who is the Taoist goddess of the moon?

The story behind the answer

Who is the Taoist goddess of the moon? Chang'e is the Taoist goddess associated with the Moon.

Chang'e is one of the best-known figures in Chinese mythology and is also honored in Chinese folk religion, Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucian traditions. She is traditionally described as the wife of Hou Yi, the heroic archer who shot down nine of ten destructive suns.

According to the most familiar legend, Hou Yi received an elixir of immortality but saved it for Chang'e. When an intruder tried to seize it, Chang'e drank the potion and rose to the Moon. There she lives in a lunar palace with the Jade Rabbit, often called Yutu, who is linked with preparing the elixir of life.

The story is central to the Mid-Autumn Festival, when families admire the full moon and share mooncakes. Chang'e is sometimes confused with Changxi, an older lunar goddess associated with twelve moons; the similar names may reflect overlapping traditions. China’s Chang'e lunar spacecraft are named after her.
