Who is the protagonist of the 2016 live-action film Assassin's Creed?

Callum Lynch is the protagonist of the 2016 live-action film Assassin's Creed. Michael Fassbender plays Callum, a modern man recruited by the Abstergo Foundation to access the memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha.

The film uses the franchise's familiar genetic-memory premise but tells a new story rather than adapting one game's campaign directly. Aguilar is an Assassin active in fifteenth-century Spain, while Callum's present-day storyline involves Abstergo's attempt to locate the Apple of Eden.

Callum Lynch is not the same character as Desmond Miles, the modern protagonist of the early video games. Ezio Auditore is also a video-game character and does not serve as the film's main modern lead. The movie was directed by Justin Kurzel and released in December 2016.
