Who is the playable Assassin in the original Assassin's Creed game?

The story behind the answer

The playable Assassin in the original Assassin's Creed game is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin introduced as the central character of the 2007 game. His name is commonly translated as “The Flying Eagle,” while Ibn-La'Ahad means “son of no one.” The story follows his missions during the Third Crusade, when he serves the Assassin Brotherhood under Al Mualim.

At the beginning, Altaïr is an exceptionally skilled but overconfident Assassin whose rank is reduced after a failed mission. His subsequent investigations require him to eliminate several targets and uncover a wider conspiracy involving the Templars and the Apple of Eden.

Altaïr should not be confused with Ezio Auditore, the Italian protagonist of the next main game, Assassin's Creed II. Altaïr also appears in later franchise stories, including Assassin's Creed: Revelations, but the original game is his defining starring role.
