Who is the playable Assassin in Assassin's Creed Origins?

The story behind the answer

The playable Assassin in Assassin's Creed Origins is Bayek of Siwa.

Bayek is a Medjay, a protector and law-enforcement figure from the Siwa Oasis in Ptolemaic Egypt. The game follows his investigation into a conspiracy that threatens his family and draws him into the origins of the Hidden Ones, the organization that later becomes the Assassin Brotherhood.

Bayek’s wife, Aya of Alexandria, is also central to the narrative and works alongside him. The game depicts a politically unstable Egypt during the reign of Cleopatra VII, with Julius Caesar and other historical figures involved in the wider conflict. Bayek travels through deserts, villages, cities, and ancient monuments.

Origins is set earlier than every other mainline game released before it, placing its events in the first century BCE. Bayek is sometimes incorrectly called the first Assassin; more precisely, he is a founder of the Hidden Ones with Aya. The organization’s formal identity changes over time as the series’ history progresses.
