Who is the only singer to take the song "Sweet Dreams" to #1?

Emmylou Harris is the only singer to take “Sweet Dreams” to No. 1 on the country chart.

The song was written and first recorded by country songwriter Don Gibson in 1955. His original version reached the country chart’s Top 10, while Faron Young’s competing 1956 recording climbed to No. 2. Gibson later rerecorded the song in 1960, but that version peaked at No. 93 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Harris recorded “Sweet Dreams” for her 1975 album Elite Hotel. Released as a single in 1976, her version became the song’s most successful country recording and reached No. 1 in December of that year. It also topped Canada’s country chart in January 1977.

Patsy Cline’s famous version is the most common mix-up. Cline’s recording became a major standard and is often the version people remember, but it did not reach No. 1 on the country chart. Reba McEntire later recorded the song too, but her version peaked at No. 19.
