Who is the only Australian aboriginal to win Wimbledon?
Answer
Evonne Goolagong
Answer
Evonne Goolagong
The only Australian Aboriginal player to win a Wimbledon singles title is Evonne Goolagong, later known as Evonne Goolagong Cawley.
Born into a Wiradjuri family in New South Wales, Goolagong grew up playing tennis in the rural town of Barellan. A local resident noticed her watching through the fence at the tennis courts and encouraged her to play. Her talent eventually brought her to Sydney, where she trained under coach Vic Edwards and developed into an international champion.
Goolagong won the Wimbledon women’s singles title in 1971, defeating fellow Australian Margaret Court in the final. She won the championship again in 1980, returning after the birth of her first child. That second victory made her the first mother to win Wimbledon’s women’s singles title in 66 years.
She won seven Grand Slam singles titles overall and was later recognized as a world No. 1. Her married name, Goolagong Cawley, is the fuller form of the answer. She is sometimes confused with Aboriginal Australian athletes in other sports, but Goolagong is the Wimbledon singles champion identified by this question.
