Who is the Nutcracker's enemy?

The Nutcracker’s enemy is the King of Mice. He commands an army of mice that battles the Nutcracker and his toy soldiers during the magical Christmas-night adventure.

The character comes from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s 1816 story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” which inspired later adaptations. In the original tale, the Mouse King is a supernatural ruler and the central antagonist of the Nutcracker’s struggle. Some translations and adaptations call him the Mouse King, Rat King, or King of Mice, but these names refer to the same opposing character.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker, first performed in 1892, keeps the Mouse King as the Nutcracker’s principal enemy. The battle is usually staged near the Christmas tree, with toy soldiers fighting the mice while Clara helps save the Nutcracker. In many productions, the Mouse King is shown with multiple heads, a detail associated especially with Hoffmann’s story.

A common mix-up is confusing the Mouse King with Drosselmeyer, the mysterious toymaker. Drosselmeyer creates or reveals much of the story’s magic, but he is not the Nutcracker’s enemy.
