Who is the main protagonist of Ubisoft's 2009 video game Assassin's Creed II?

The story behind the answer

Ezio Auditore is the main protagonist of Ubisoft's 2009 video game Assassin's Creed II.

Ezio begins the story as a young Florentine nobleman in Renaissance Italy. After his father and brothers are executed, he becomes involved in a long conflict with the Templars and gradually joins the Assassin Brotherhood. His personal quest expands into a wider struggle involving powerful historical figures and the mysterious precursor civilization.

Assassin's Creed II introduced Ezio as a more socially connected and developing hero than Altaïr. The game follows his growth across several decades and visits locations such as Florence, Venice, Forlì, and the Vatican. Ezio later returns as the central character of Brotherhood and Revelations, making him the most extensively featured protagonist in the early series.

A common mix-up is identifying Leonardo da Vinci as the protagonist because he is an important ally. Da Vinci instead helps Ezio by designing and improving equipment. The modern-day player character remains connected to Desmond Miles, who experiences Ezio's memories through the Animus.
