Who is the main historical protagonist of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag?

The story behind the answer

Edward Kenway is the main historical protagonist of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Edward is a Welsh privateer who becomes involved with the Assassin–Templar conflict during the Golden Age of Piracy. He takes the identity of a defeated Assassin for personal gain, but his ambitions gradually draw him into the wider struggle.

The game is set mainly in the Caribbean during the early eighteenth century. Edward commands the ship Jackdaw and encounters historical pirates such as Blackbeard, Benjamin Hornigold, and Mary Read.

Edward belongs to the Kenway family, which also includes Haytham Kenway and Ratonhnhaké:ton, commonly called Connor. That family connection can cause confusion, but Edward is the playable historical character in Black Flag.
