Who is the grumpy cashier at the Krusty Krab?

The grumpy cashier at the Krusty Krab is Squidward Tentacles.

Squidward works the register at Mr. Krabs’s fast-food restaurant, while SpongeBob works nearby as the fry cook. He dislikes the job, his employer’s money obsession, and the noisy behavior of his neighbors SpongeBob and Patrick. His irritated attitude and dry sarcasm make him one of the show’s most recognizable characters.

Despite his name, Squidward is an anthropomorphic octopus rather than a squid. Creator Stephen Hillenburg chose the squid-related name because “Octoward” did not sound right, while the character’s large head suited Hillenburg’s idea of an aspiring intellectual. Squidward dreams of artistic success, especially as a clarinet player and painter, but the series frequently presents his ambitions as comic failures. He lives between SpongeBob and Patrick on Conch Street, making escape from their antics nearly impossible.
