Who is the all-time top scorer in the UEFA Champions League?

The story behind the answer

Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer in UEFA Champions League history.

Ronaldo’s record was built across three clubs: Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. His most productive spell came at Real Madrid, where he scored 105 Champions League goals in 101 appearances. His pace, movement, aerial ability and extraordinary finishing made him especially effective in knockout matches.

Ronaldo has also won the competition’s seasonal scoring title seven times, more than any other player. He scored 17 goals for Real Madrid in 2013–14, still the record for a single Champions League season. He is also the only player to score in three Champions League finals.

Lionel Messi is the nearest modern rival, followed by Robert Lewandowski. Raúl once held the record and remains one of the competition’s historic scorers, but Ronaldo overtook him and Messi to establish the current mark. Rankings generally refer to the competition proper and may exclude qualifying rounds.
