How many UEFA Champions League titles has Carlo Ancelotti won as manager?

The story behind the answer

Carlo Ancelotti has won five UEFA Champions League titles as a manager.

His first two victories came with AC Milan, against Juventus in 2003 and Liverpool in 2007. He then won three times with Real Madrid: against Atlético Madrid in 2014, Liverpool in 2022 and Borussia Dortmund in 2024. UEFA counts the European Cup and Champions League as the same continuous competition for historical records.

The 2014 triumph made Ancelotti the first manager to win the competition three times. His 2022 victory made him the first coach to win four, and the 2024 final extended his record to five. He is also one of the few people to win the European Cup both as a player and as a manager, having lifted it with Milan in 1989 and 1990 as a midfielder.

A common mix-up is to count his 2005 final appearance as a victory. Milan lost that match to Liverpool on penalties after leading 3–0 at half-time, so it does not add to Ancelotti’s title total.
